The key to Outisan’s uphill power assist feature lies in the motor technology. Two key performance indicators of a motor are power and torque. Power is maximized at high speeds and is more related to top speed. Torque, on the other hand, is the measure of a motor’s turning force and directly affects acceleration, load-carrying capacity, and hill-climbing ability. Since electric wagons typically match human walking speeds, power is less critical. Torque is the real performance metric that matters. Based on our previous experiment to explore the powertrain system, approximately 20 Nm of torque is needed to pull a 150 lbs of payloads up a 10-degree incline.

A Close Look at Motor Types
Different types of motors offer varying levels of performance for uphill assistance. Generally speaking, motors of electric wagons can be categorized into four main types: brushed vs. brushless, and direct-drive vs. geared.
- Brushed vs. Brushless: Brushless motors are more efficient and powerful than brushed motors due to the absence of friction from brushes. Brushed motors, on the other hand, experience wear and tear on the brushes, reducing efficiency and lifespan. Also, brushless motors are quieter and more reliable.
- Direct-drive vs. Geared: Direct-drive motors drive the load directly without a gearbox, offering high efficiency,low noise, and high precision. Geared motors, in contrast, use gears to increase torque but can introduce backlash and reduce precision.
